On a Walk: Virtual Collection 1.

Memories of Socialist Creativity

When the weather isn’t suitable for the beach, we can enjoy pleasant walks, wandering through the small streets. Our discoveries can be gathered in a real or virtual album.

In this post, we’ll focus on some decorative elements of holiday homes, which have a long tradition in this area.

However, one era stands out, and its remnants can still be found here and there. In the holiday homes built during the socialist period, it’s often noticeable how people compensated for limited material choices with creativity.

They used whatever was available in the workshop, such as repurposing cut-out circles or leftover (scrap) metal sheets to decorate fences. Some designs are quite common around here, suggesting they might have been made by a local metalworker.

It’s also very common to see fence elements creatively shaped from rebar, often with an artistic flair. Rebar is easy to recognise by its ridged texture…

Even today, there are people who invest in decorative solutions for a new fence, though naturally, the choice of materials is much more refined now.
