The Story of the Plot and the Willow Tree

First About the Plot

To the best of my knowledge, my family first had a holiday home in Balatonberény on my father’s side. My grandmother often talked about her childhood adventures there, as she was quite a mischievous little girl and got into all sorts of trouble.

Then, when she got married and had her own family, they bought two plots of land in Zamárdi for their two sons. One of these plots was particularly large and beautiful, although it was initially just a reed-covered jungle. This plot went to my uncle, Antal Béla, whom I mentioned in another post in connection with paintings.

As seen in the satellite image, this plot was so large that it was gradually sold off in parts. Eventually, several plots were made out of it, and on the last remaining piece, a condominium was built. My uncle received one of the holiday flats in exchange for the plot. This holiday flat is now the Bonrila Sun Apartment.

The Willow Tree

In 2024, the willow tree is still in the garden, although unfortunately, it’s not in the best condition. Who knows how much longer it will be there? Nevertheless, it fights bravely to survive and still provides pleasant shade in the southern sunshine.

What’s the Story of This Willow Tree?

The story is simply that willow stakes were used to mark the boundaries of the plot. When they were no longer needed, Béla stuck one of these stakes into the garden, and it sprouted. This beautiful, large tree has been growing there since 1978.

On the other photo, my grandmother is seen standing by the foundations of the condominium being built in 1978.
