Halas Karcsi's Snack Bar
Not far from our apartment lies a true gem of Lake Balaton, Halas Karcsi’s (Fishy Charlie’s) Snack Bar. We discovered this iconic eatery a few years ago and have been returning every year since to try something new and delicious. Even the members of our family who don’t typically enjoy fish have praised the various fried fish dishes served here.
Halas Karcsi’s Snack Bar is one of the few places where you can find authentic Balaton fish, not just hake, which, while iconic, is not native to the lake.
This year, we tried the fisherman’s soup, and it was a hit as well!
You can also order food to go, so you can enjoy these heavenly fish dishes at home or on the beach.
Tradition and Future
The namesake Halas Karcsi, aka Károly Csibrák, fried fish in Zamárdi for three decades. From May 2023, his son and daughter-in-law have continued this legacy, maintaining the place’s family-friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The snack bar, which traditionally opens around Pentecost, serves freshly fried or cooked bream, perch, and pike-perch. A unique feature of this place is that you can choose the fish, which they then prepare masterfully.
Rich Selection and Special Dishes
The snack bar’s specialties include whole fried pike-perch and fried fish milt, but those who don’t prefer fish won’t go hungry either. The menu also features gypsy roast, breaded pork chop, and pancakes. Every dish is freshly prepared with their own seasoning, and the quality is guaranteed as the snack bar has excellent suppliers. Side dishes include steak potatoes, fried potatoes, and sliced homemade bread, while the drink selection features soft drinks, draught beers, and wine spritzers.
Retro Atmosphere
Halas Karcsi’s Snack Bar is special not only for its flavors but also for its atmosphere. The building has retained its charming, retro vibe, which adds to the overall experience. Due to its popularity, the wait time can sometimes be longer, but you can pass the time with a glass of wine or beer.
