Discover the Wonders of Balaton Bird Garden!
Also known as Kereki Bird Park, this bird sanctuary made it onto our list of must-visit places when we last visited Fehérkő Castle. We spotted the inviting aviary with its blue birds from the car along the roadside – we knew we had to come back!
A Bird Park Can Move Too
After nearly 25 years of existence, the Rácz family relocated from the Southern Great Plain to Kereki to fulfil their dream of showcasing even more beautiful birds to the public on a much larger area, all while continuing their breeding efforts.
Originally opened in 1993, this was Hungary’s first ornamental bird park, featuring the country’s largest variety of species. Visitors can not only admire parrots and other birds but also learn a lot about proper care and breeding during the daily guided tours.
What Does the Bird Park Offer?
The park uses a unique technology to showcase the birds: the dual-space birdhouses allow visitors to see more birds during the guided tours than they would on a self-guided walk. This setup not only creates a more spectacular experience but also contributes to the birds’ long and healthy lives.
Guests can also explore the park on their own, allowing everyone to enjoy its beauty at their own pace. On rainy days, the Tropical House provides a climate-controlled environment where you can marvel at 30 species of birds, and for a small additional fee, a 15-20 minute guided tour is available.
Petting Zoo and Rest Area
Children will especially love the chance to pet dwarf rabbits, ponies, and squirrels, located in the upper part of the park. There’s also a rest area with log swings, benches, and seating where visitors can relax. From the hillside and the lookout point, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Somogy Hills.
Certain animals can be fed too: pre-prepared apples and carrots can be given to the ponies and kangaroos, while squirrels enjoy peanuts. However, it’s important to note that feeding the birds is not allowed to help maintain their health.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
Spring and autumn are particularly ideal for photographing and filming the park (trust me, you won’t be able to resist!). The park is also open during the summer, but it’s best to visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
On rainy days, the Tropical House’s mini-exhibit is definitely worth it – despite the small space, you’ll be amazed at the peaceful coexistence of the birds.
Tickets and More Information
Always check the current opening hours on their website or Facebook page before visiting.
By purchasing tickets, not only do you gain an unforgettable experience, but you also contribute to the park’s self-sustained operation. The park’s gift shop offers special souvenirs, including handcrafted feather jewellery – they’re hard to resist, so you might as well give in! 😊
Come and Explore!
Balaton Bird Garden is a magical place where, after enjoying the colourful and noisy spectacle of exotic birds, you can relax on the hillside and take in the landscape, while the kids burn off some energy!
If you can keep up the pace, you can combine the visit with a hike up to Fehérkő Castle, but that will definitely turn it into an all-day adventure!
Where Is It?
Kereki is located about 14 km from Zamárdi, with Petőfi Street as its main road. It’s easy to find: number 58, and it’s well signposted.
How to Get There?
By car:
The fastest route is via the M7 motorway, but note that this is a toll road! Exit at junction 121.
If you prefer to avoid toll roads, take Route 7 to Aldi in Szántód, then turn left onto Szántódi Road. Drive straight through Kőröshegy to reach Kereki.
By public transport:
There’s a direct bus service from the Zamárdi railway stop bus station, located in front of the Spórolós CBA store. The return bus stop is on Route 7. Check the current timetable online!
The easiest way to reach Zamárdi centre is to walk to Dessewffy (pronounced “Dezshoffi”) Street, turn right, and walk straight until the street turns into Aradi Street. After a short walk, you’ll arrive at the railway station junction. The CBA is on your right, and if you continue straight across the tracks and turn left, you’ll find the bus stop.
